Satsuma Owari #5 Pot

The Owari Satsuma Tree (Citrus unshiu ‘Owari’) is a popular, cold-hardy citrus tree known for producing sweet, seedless, and easy-to-peel mandarin-like fruits. It is highly valued for its early ripening fruit, typically maturing in late fall to early winter, making it a favorite for fresh, homegrown citrus. An interesting characteristic of the Owari Satsuma is its ability to thrive in cooler climates compared to other citrus trees, while still delivering excellent-tasting fruit.

In southern Louisiana, the Owari Satsuma Tree grows to a height of 8 to 12 feet with a spread of 6 to 10 feet, making it ideal for smaller spaces or home orchards. It thrives in full sun, requiring at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight daily for the best fruit production. This variety is exceptionally cold-tolerant, able to withstand temperatures as low as 15°F (-9°C), making it well-suited for USDA zones 8-11. In southern Louisiana, it grows well as a perennial with minimal protection needed during occasional cold snaps.

Size: Brown Select trees are larger than Owari trees, growing to 12–15 ft tall compared to 10–15 ft tall for Owari trees. 

Fruit size: Brown Select fruit is relatively large and bright orange, while Owari fruit is small to medium-sized. 

Maturity: Brown Select fruit ripens a couple of weeks earlier than Owari fruit.
