The Meyer Lemon Tree (Citrus × meyeri) is a popular, compact fruit tree known for producing sweet, juicy lemons that have a distinct flavor, often described as a cross between a lemon and a mandarin orange. This citrus tree is prized for its prolific fruiting, even when grown in containers, and its fragrant, white blossoms that attract pollinators. An interesting characteristic of the Meyer Lemon is its thin, edible skin and less acidic flavor compared to traditional lemons, making it a favorite for home gardeners and chefs alike.

In southern Louisiana, the Meyer Lemon Tree typically grows to a height of 6 to 10 feet with a spread of 4 to 6 feet, making it perfect for small gardens or container growing. It thrives in full sun, requiring at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day for optimal fruit production. Meyer Lemons are moderately cold-tolerant, withstanding temperatures down to around 20°F (-6°C). However, in southern Louisiana’s USDA zones 9-11, it’s best to provide protection during cold snaps or bring container-grown trees indoors when temperatures drop below freezing.
